Carpet shopping is
not as easy as it used to be. There used to be hundreds of small carpet mills
that created a high level of competition between them and helped keep carpet prices low.
Today there are only three main carpet manufacturers:
The big three have bought up
most
of the smaller mills and now they are raising their prices. Some of the price
increases are due to the price of oil, some price increases are due to supply
and demand. New fiber modifications also cause the cost of a carpet to be
higher.
For example, the new "soft" nylon carpets are higher priced because they
are softer to the touch and offer a look and feel similar to that of wool
carpets.
DuPont™
Sorona® Polymer
Another new fiber on the market
is called Sorona®, and is a polymer made from corn. (Actually it was
invented back in the 1940's) Invented by Dupont™, they claim this new fiber
has great anti-stain properties. For me to rate this product will take some
time. Although the manufacturer claims the product is great, I never recommend any products to my readers until I have personal
"long-term" experience with the product. Unless Dupont™ invites me over for a personal
tour of their manufacturing facility and gives me solid proof that their
product is as good as they say, it may be a few years before I will be
able to give you my blessing with Sorona®. Learn more about
carpet fibers here.
Wool and Soft
Nylon fibers
Wool carpets are
very soft and desirable. Those who
want to buy a softer carpet that has the look and feel of wool may decide to buy
this new type of "softer" nylon carpet. Sold under the registered names
of Tactesse®, Lisse'®, Anso Caress®
and others, this softer nylon carpet fiber may be what you are looking for. The prices for this type of
carpet will continue to be higher than a standard nylon carpet. There are
some drawbacks to buying this new "softer" nylon carpet and I discuss
them in my ebook.
Buying Carpet
Wholesale
Looking for a
wholesale deal? Good luck. What exactly does wholesale mean? It means you buy
carpet directly from the manufacturer. The only way I know to get a wholesale deal is to
have an account with the mill. There are no mills that I know of that will sell
to the general public. Sure you can find lots of RETAIL places that offer
"Wholesale To The Public" or "Factory Direct Prices", but
this is not buying wholesale. Some dealers buy "seconds" or "roll
ends" at a discounted price. These are often not "first grade" carpets and these
carpets may not offer a factory warranty either. In fact, you may be buying a defective
carpet and not even know it. By the time you find out, it's too late.
You've been scammed.
Buying Carpet
From Online Sources
I seldom recommend
buying carpet from an online source. Too often these carpet brokers are nothing more
than a small office with an 800 number. They take your order and have another
carpet company ship carpet to you. What I keep hearing from duped carpet buying
consumers, is that the carpet you order may not be the carpet you get. You may order a 45-ounce carpet and a 38-ounce carpet
shows up. This is the old bait and switch routine. They know that you have no
idea what the difference is between the two and even if you do, it is your
responsibility to prove it, and ship the carpet back at your expense if
you are not happy. Scammed again.
Carpet Shipping
Returning a
defective roll of
carpet is costly and difficult. While it may only cost a carpet distributor $100 to ship a roll of carpet to you, it will cost you a
lot more than that to ship it back to them. They have a contract with the trucking company and get huge
discounts for volume. You don't. Shipping one roll of carpet could cost you
hundreds, not to mention all the headache of wrapping it back up and getting it to the shipping company.
Want the shipping company to pick it up at your place? That costs more money. If
you get to this point, you've been scammed.
